Butler-Freeport Community Trail The Butler-Freeport Community Trail follows the route of the first railroad in Butler County, built-in 1873. It's a great option for the whole family, with multiple trailheads along its route and a level surface along the majority of its length. The full length of the trail is 21 miles, from Connoquenessing Creek in east Butler to central Freeport, but there are lots of places to join the trail along its length, so you can choose the right length for you. 2. Alameda Park Trails Over 11 miles of singletrack are spread out across several trails in this community park on the western outskirts of Butler. All the trails are built to the latest IMBA standards, guaranteeing a fun ride for all. Start at Maryland Avenue, one of the oldest logging roads in the park that provides access to many of the other trails in the park. It's sometimes wet in places after heavy rains. From here you can access many of the tougher trails on the north side of the creek, including the intermediate Lift Ticket and Rocky and Bulwinkle trails. Both of these provide access to the expert Flying Squirrel Trail, a fast and technical downhill run with three sections of large bumps. It's not for the faint-hearted! 3. Moraine Bike Trail Located in the nearby Moraine State Park, this long, level paved trail follows the twists and turns of Lake Arthur's shoreline. Rolling terrain and beautiful scenery make it a great choice. It's just over 7 miles long, with parking lots at either end. It's frequently used by runners and walkers, so keep an eye out when you're riding. Water and bathrooms are speckled along the route but are all closed in the off-season. 4. Moraine Full Meal Deal The various singletrack trails at Moraine State are frequently combined into one long ride, which covers 12 miles of steep ups and downs. Lots of climbing, technical obstacles, and downhills are on the cards here. It's worth taking a map, as the various tracks can get confusing. The ride starts and finishes at the Mt. Union parking lot, and immediately crosses several rock gardens, before heading up to the top of a ridge.  The trails follow the ridge eastwards, before descending through a valley. Expect lots of ups and downs as you head eastward, before turning south along one of two powerline clearings. Almost all of the trails you'll be following include steep uphill climbs and are rated as difficult but can be great fun if you enjoy technical climbs and obstacles. The relaxed vintage look includes lots of exposed brick and generously sized booths to relax and enjoy their delicious food. The laid-back atmosphere doesn't extend to the kitchen or the servers. Both groups are fast, friendly, and their commitment shows. The Shop's basic burger is a beef or lentil patty with lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, onions, and dill pickles. The patties are freshly made every day. Don't think basic means boring though the taste is excellent. To keep you excited, there's a range of toppings, including bacon, brisket, and chili. They also have five specialty burgers that have been winning new customers since they opened. The Shop is open from 10.30 am Monday to Saturday. The Holy Cow Seventeen miles might sound like a long way to go for a burger, but if you think that you haven't eaten at Holy Cow yet. The restaurant is located at 1230 W Park Road, Slippery Rock. They offer beef or black bean choices for your patty, and seven possible combinations to go with it. One of our favorites is the dragon burger with your choice of patty, lettuce, tomato, onion, fresh jalapenos, and pepper jack cheese. The Euro burger is our other choice, with a patty, portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions, arugula, and Swiss cheese. Holy Cow has a great location, and it's built just like an old-time diner complete with a tall neon "Eat Here" arrow sign. The retro look is almost as much a crowd-pleaser as their fantastic burgers. They're open from 11 am to 8 pm from Friday to Sunday. North Country Brew Pub This pub was originally built in 1805. It's operated as a pub and eating house for most of that time. The building has been extensively rebuilt using all-original wood and other materials. The building serves as a wonderful backdrop to their amazing burgers. They offer five basic burger options that can be customized with a wide variety of additional toppings. Your patty choice includes Angus beef, chicken, vegetarian, vegan chicken, and Canadian-raised elk! If you haven't tried an elk burger before, you're for a real treat. Butler, PA is a great little city with lots of amenities. But sometimes you'll be looking for something to do that isn't available in town. No matter what your interests are, there's bound to be day trips in the local area to suit you. more 1. Live Sport in Pittsburgh Pittsburgh has a proud sporting history, including hosting the first professional football game in 1902, with its franchises winning numerous Stanley Cups, World Series, and Super Bowls. Nowadays, the city is home to major sports teams in football, baseball, and hockey. And while it is possible to simply watch on TV, it's a far better experience being there in person. Tickets are surprisingly affordable as well, starting from $22 for a Pirates game, while the Penguins or Steelers are a little more expensive. The city is just over an hour's drive away, so it's an easy journey for the whole family. 2. Akron Zoo There's no reason you must stay within the state. Akron Zoo, just south of Cleveland, Ohio, is home to over 700 animals, including otters, capybaras, lions, and Humboldt penguins. Up-close encounters are available for certain species, such as Galapagos Tortoises and Boer Goats. There is a café open year-round in the Komodo Kingdom area of the zoo, with additional concessions in other parts of the zoo open during summer. The zoo is open 11 am – 4 pm daily from November to March, or 10 am – 5 pm the rest of the year. Tickets cost just $9 per person, with on-site parking costing $5. 3. Raccoon Creek State Park Another great place for animal lovers is Raccoon Creek State Park, near Hookstown. An abundance of wildlife, including warblers, turkeys, red foxes, skunks, and opossums can be seen from its 44 miles of hiking trails. Most trails in the park also allow horse riding, mountain biking, and cross country skiing (weather permitting). Alternatively, if you prefer getting out on the water, there is boat rental available at Raccoon Lake, with kayaks, canoes, hydrobikes, and rowboats available to hire up to one hour before dusk. It is also permitted to fish in any of the park's waterways at any time of year. You can catch bluegill, sunfish, bullhead catfish, and smallmouth bass, among others. 4. Carnegie Museum of Natural History If you're looking for somewhere to take the kids, the Carnegie Museum of Natural History could be what you're looking for. With a wide range of exhibits, including dinosaurs, American Wildlife, and Arctic life, there's bound to be something of interest for any visitor. The Discovery Basecamp gallery is a particularly child-oriented area of the museum, with a focus on hands-on displays to keep kids occupied for hours. Located in downtown Pittsburgh, the museum is open 10 am – 5 pm Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, and from 10 am – 8 pm on Thursdays. There are 60 guest rooms at the motel, where there is also an indoor waterpark with a whirlpool and a sauna, also boasting two waterslides. Plus, four meeting or banquet rooms. You can take advantage of golf packages, and outings are available. Hampton Inn Located at Butler Crossings, this Hampton Inn is 30 minutes from Slippery Rock University and has 80 guest rooms. One feature, that we rather like, is the outdoor patio with a barbecue grill. It is also great that on-site laundry facilities are provided (but a patio with barbecue gets top marks!). Detailed accessibility information is supplied by the motel, and with good event facilities too, it's an option to explore. The Holiday Inn Express and Suites Close to Benjamin Franklin Highway, on North Duffy Road, the Holiday Inn is an up-to-date practical choice, especially for the visitor who values functionality without sacrificing standards. All the facilities we would expect are available, and accessibility information is supplied. It is also conveniently close to Slippery Rock University and has a bookable 500 square-foot meeting room. SpringHill Suites by Marriot Centrally located at East Jefferson Street, the SpringHill Suites is exactly that; all guest accommodation is suite accommodation.
