An open road

When you’re visiting the great city of Philadelphia, take a day or two to explore the beautiful suburbs surrounding the area. Butler, PA is a great location to take the family out for some great outdoor activities. And when it comes to things to do, you’ll find a plethora of options. From miniature golfing to hiking to catching a baseball game, we’ve got it all. Following are a few options to consider.

1. Preston Park

Pack up that picnic basket and bring the whole family to this 88-acre wooded paradise. With plenty of picnic areas, you can spread out the blanket and enjoy some rays of sunshine while the kids run around. Don’t forget to bring Rover because he’ll love the dog-walking trail. This is also a popular area for bird-watching, so don’t forget your binoculars.

2. Succop Nature Park

With 2 ponds, lots of walking trails, bird watching, beautiful architecture, and a nature area that kids will love, Succop Nature Park is a locals’ favorite. Sit by the pond and quietly watch for wildlife. We like that the walking trails are mostly shaded, making it comfortable in the hot summer months. The park is also a popular venue for weddings and birthday parties. Enjoy your time here from dawn until dusk.

3. Eracers Mini Golf

Who doesn’t love a friendly game of miniature golf? Here you’ll find friendly staff, well-maintained courses, and affordable prices. They are open daily from noon until 10 p.m. in May through September. It’s generally not very crowded either. Prices for adults are $9, kids ages 5 to 10 are $7, and kids 4 and under tee off for free with a paid adult.

4. Pullman Park

Opened in 1934, Pullman Park has a long history of baseball fun. Though small, the stadium gives you a large ballpark feel. In the old days, farm teams like the New York Yankees, Cleveland Indians, and Detroit Tigers made this park their home base (pun intended). They also have a concession stand serving stadium favorites. Visit their website for the calendar of events and entrance fees.

5. Eerie Acres Farm

During the Halloween season, visit Eerie Acres’ cornfield maze. Kids love the hayride and the lurkers who do their best to frighten passers-by as they drift through the field. They also have an indoor haunted house. Adults can partake from the beer garden on Saturday nights. Please drink responsibly and in moderation.
